Disney reimagined...

Thanks to a friend posting a link on Facebook, I was introduced to the work of a fabulous artist - Claire Hummel, at Shoomlah.com. She has a series of prints where she's reimagined classic Disney princesses in accurate period costume (and oh happiness, she sells PRINTS!).

Snow White, early 16th century Germany

Pocahontas, 17th century Powhatan costume

Cinderella, mid-1860s

Jasmine, pre-Islamic Middle Eastern

Sleeping Beauty, the year 1485 (and my favorite!)

Ariel, 1890's evening gown

Belle, 1770's French court

I hope to purchase a print or two soon, I think they are amazing! I'd love to hear your favorite - mine is Sleeping Beauty, since that is probably my all-time favorite Disney film (and fairy tale - and the retellings - I could go on and on...). :)

The Cinderella one is lovely. The Disney princess film I am told that I couldn't see enough of as a child (in all honesty I don't remember) is "The Little Mermaid."

These are beautiful! I do like Sleeping Beauty's costume the best. It's not my favourite Disney princess tale though. Hmmm! I'm not sure which one I like best. I do have a fondness for Cinderella but the Little Mermaid had better music. :)

I also love Sleeping Beauty the best! However, growing up, the one who I loved to death was Belle....or so my mom tells me.

Oh, I had to tell you....and sorry to go off topic....I JUST FOUND MIDNIGHT LACE ON YOUTUBE!!!!! Going to watch it now!

How did she decide what century/country they belonged in?

@Rissi - I'm pretty sure 'The Little Mermaid' was worn out in my house when I was a kid too. :) I can remember singing the songs ALL. THE. TIME.

@phylly3 - I've got to say, I think it was an awfully interesting choice to dress Ariel in the Gilded Age! :)

@Ella - Belle is probably my favorite "modern" Disney princess (hello, it's the books!). :) But I always come back to 'Sleeping Beauty.' And OMG I am going to have to hunt 'Midnight Lace' up on YouTube!!!

@heidenkind - I haven't found anything online that details the process behind each print (not yet, anyway). Aurora, Pocahontas, and Belle suggest to me that she took her cues from the films, since the dresses are similar - the others, I'm not so sure??

@Kristin - ME TOO! :) I also love the fact that she sells post card prints for $5! I may collect them all at some point! :)

These are absolutely wonderful! I'd have to say that I'm a bit biased towards the pocahontas one because that was my favorite movie as a child. But I also LOVE what they did with Cinderella and Belle. It's great to see someone paying attention to the time periods. Lovely post. :)

I have to say that Belle is my favorite, even the print because i love 1700's French history. In my house as a child beauty and beast was wore out as was the little meremaid.

@LitLover - I love Pocahontas too! Great film. Glad you enjoyed the prints! :)

@Juju - Awesome! I just adore these prints -- need to order some ASAP!

@Carissa - Belle's gown is just gorgeous -- and I do love how Hummel reimagined her gown -- would love to see an actual, physical version of it, that would blow me away! :)
