Book Blurb/Info:

Follow the Heart by Kaye Dacus
Book 1 in The Great Exhibition Series
Coming from B&H Publishing in May 2013

Kate Dearing’s life is turned upside down when her father loses everything in a railroad land speculation and she and her brother are shipped off to their mother’s brother, Sir Anthony, in England with one edict: marry money.

Though their uncle tries to ensure Kate finds matrimonial prospects only among the highest echelon of British society, her attentions stray to the one of the least eligible people at her uncle’s home—the garden designer.

Trying to push her feelings for the handsome—but not wealthy—man aside, Kate’s prospects brighten when a friend of Sir Anthony’s, a wealthy viscount, shows favorable interest in her. But will marrying for the financial security of her family be the right thing to do, when her heart is telling her she’s making a mistake?

Mandates . . . money . . . matrimony. Who will follow the heart?

Question: What was the building called that housed the Great Exhibition, and who designed it?

Answer: The Great Exhibition opened on May 1, 1851, and closed on October 11, 1851. And one of the most frequent visitors was Queen Victoria herself. “May 1. This day is one of the greatest and most glorious days of our lives, with which to my pride and joy the name of my dearly beloved Albert is for ever associated!”

  1. Oh, gorgeous, gorgeous cover, Kaye. The design, the colors, the dress, the HERO! I know you have to love that purple. I'm so pleased for you. Looking forward to another good read and a set of characters I'm sure I'll not want to leave at The End. :)

This is a time period in English history I know little about except from a few previous novels, so it will be fun immersing myself in the mid 19th century.

  2. Yes, the cover is gorgeous. What a gown!

I think what first intrigued me about this series is that it is set during the opening of the Great Exhibition.
It will be interesting to see who Kate's chooses in the end.

  3. I love the two gentleman watching. I guess they aren't all about the dress like we ladies are...

I'm really anticipating this series from Kaye and I've enjoyed 'watching the process' as she brainstormed this series. Can't wait!

  6. They chose a fantastic color for her dress, love the cover.
This time period intrigues me because its where the world stands at the begining of great discovery and technological advance. Despite all of the forward thinking in science, math and engineering, women are still being forced to choose between marriage for love or money. It's always a moving story, especially when they choose to follow their hearts.

  8. The cover is gorgeous! I love reading books from this time period so I can't wait to read this one.

My favorite movies from this era are probably North & South (based on Gaskell's novel) and The Young Victoria (which I happen to be watching now!).

  9. The Young Victoria was a lovely period piece, but as an actual film, I'm going to have to go with the 2009 Sherlock Holmes. Dysfunctional detectives and Robert Downey Jr....yes.

  10. Turns out I don't think of much of women's Victorian dress (meaning I don't like the dress on the cover) but I love seeing the two guys and I'm *so* excited for this book!

  11. There's a manga called Emma where the h/h make out in the Crystal Palace after it closes--love it! Of course, there's North & South, and Adele Ashworth wrote a novel that centers around the Crystal Palace.

  12. Hi....

    just kidding!

Seriously, I know very little about the Great Exhibition so I'm super excited to read Kaye's book to enhance my knowledge a bit!

  13. Hello! I have been following your blog for a while now, but I have yet to actually comment. I figured the scavenger hunt was a perfect opportunity to step out from my lurking and say, “hello”. I love the latest production of Little Dorrit, with Claire Foy as Amy. I have watched it a few times with my mom, and we both fall in love all over again every time we see it. I have never read the book, but I really need to! I also love North and South. I think it is a requirement to love it if you are a female.
