Oh. My. WORD. The look alone of this film promises to be amazing! (And yes, yes the trailer made me tear up...I predict I will be a blubbering mess while watching this in the theater!)
You probably already know this, but I almost never watch current films, and I am absolutely not a fan of remakes. That said, I just may give this one a chance. My favorite version of "Les Miserables" is the 70's version (Richard Jordan and Anthony Perkins), and, after all, that is a remake. I prefer that one to the 30's and 50's films. I still have not seen the 90's Liam Neeson version, so I might as well watch that one and this upcoming one to round myself out with an every 20 year version of the film.
Add to that, the Broadway musical will be in our city in September. Unless something happens to change things, Ella and I will be taking that in together.
Thanks for sharing-I've been waiting for the trailer to come out since we've seen the trailers for a lot of other winter releases. I didn't quite cry but it was close.
OH. MY. WORD. is right! This is my absolute favorite musical and story. We've seen it several times on stage but I've been worried I'll hate the movie. If it's anything like the trailer, I'll love it! I can't wait! But I'll probably have to keep my hand over my mouth during the movie, like I do at the stage production. I have a tendency to want to sing along with that wonderful music!
@Patti - Oh I am SO excited that you and Ella will be able to see this on-stage! I just ADORE this musical, it is a favorite! Hope you have a great day as well!
@Bookworm1858 - I can relate. :)
@Anne - I am so excited about this! I'm telling you between trying not to sing along and trying not to become a complete sobbing mess I'll be exhausted by the end of this film! ;)
@Rissi - Have you never listened to the songs or seen a production? Oh my WORD this is an amazing, fabulous show! Hope you'll enjoy it!
I think it's a great trailer, and a great choice of a song. I love the fact that none of it is dubbed -- the singing was all done on set, so it has a very raw, very emotional quality to it, as opposed to a more relaxed studeo recording soundtrack.
BUT... I'm also aching to hear Javert sing something. Even though Crowe is an utter jerk, he is a superb actor. I want to know, tho, if he can pull off Javert, because if you get Javert wrong, the powerfulness of the music fades a bit.
Still... it doesn't have to be a terrific cast of singers to make it a great film. "Sweeney Todd" was splendid, and neither Helena nor Johnny are teriffic singers. It just... worked.
Dad watched the trailer (he LOVES the film) and said, "Russell Crowe is Javert, huh? He'll be awesome!! He's so used to being a jackass, he won't even have to act!" =D
I have no doubt he'll be great as an actor. He was brilliant in "Gladiator." He was brilliant in "Master & Commander." He was brilliant in "3:10 to Yuma." But... I WANT TO HEAR HIM SING.
Also, thanks to this trailer, I've had the music in my head all day long. I just randomly pounded on the desk and belted out, "CAN YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING??? SINGING THE SONGS OF ANGRY MEN!"
@Charity - I'm hoping Russell will leave me pleasantly surprised in the vocal department. ;) And I LOVE that you just burst into song and freaked out your mom...I should test that out on my cubicle neighbors. :P
Also, as a note to Patti -- you will want to be prepared, the first half of the current theater tour is VERY raunchy. I saw it the last time it passed through Denver, and nearly left at the intermission, I was so shocked at how bawdy it was. But in the end, I was glad I stayed -- the second half was magnificent.
Oh, how I cannot WAIT to see this!!! I've seen the stage version 3 times, including the recent adaptation (which I wasn't crazy about), but it is by far my favorite musical. I've nearly worn out my DVD of the 25th anniversary concert. Such wonderful music....sigh. :o)
Wow... thanks for posting! I had my doubts about another remake, but the trailer looks fabulous! I'll be adding this to my must-see-in-theaters list for the year. :)

Hm... this looks good but I am not sure that I'll like it much as a musical. Still I'll rent the DVD when it becomes available. =)

Nope I haven't but I love the pretty song over the trailer - it sounds great! =)
And, Charity, that is AWESOME! That would lend a great quality to the film. Great to know.
@Charity - Oh that is good to know, that all of the singing was recorded "live." I think that will work really well for this adaptation.
I really feel like Crowe will nail Javert acting-wise...but singing -- yes I'm waiting to see how that aspect of the film works out as well.
@Rissi - This musical is just superb from start to finish...the songs, oh they are achingly beautiful!

My mother jumped. Ahh, good times.

Seems a little weak (hopefully, they've put him through some vocal training since then, so he's found more range) but... he's not bad.
This and The Hobbit in the same season? I might faint...
;)

Gawd. I am DEFINITELY not seeing that in the theater. I started crying just watching the trailer!

@Charity - Oh, thanks for that link!
@Jennifer - I know, right? Me too. :)
@Christy - I've only seen the stage version once. LOVE the anniversary concert!
@Tasha - Oh c'mon...you'll be in good company. ;)
@Nat - You're welcome! I am so happy this looks amazing! :)
