I will say, however, that in the book (and in the miniseries, which I also love -- mostly for Stephen Dillane's WONDERFUL Karenin) the religious themes are much more present. I was disappointed that in this film, they left out the key moments between Levin and Kitty -- two instances in which her forgiveness of his sins and in which God spared her life, changed him from his atheistic worldview to belief. But overall, it was good -- just not quite as good as it could have been, if they hadn't stripped the Christianity out of it.Charityhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15928012771461206094noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1319032275293010502.post-30562282089447689992012-12-12T06:25:20.049-08:002012-12-12T06:25:20.049-08:00@Lori - Oh I'm excited! I never noticed this before, and it must be the angle of the shot, but I swear all I could focus on was Sean's ELF-LIKE ears! They looked huge and pointed. It was so weird. I will admit this was during his heyday when he could masterfully pull off a desperately-in-love, pining look, but then the ears ruined it. You will also be permanently over him (as I am) if you watch that BBC clip of The Accused I emailed you.

Lorihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13526569454787709981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1319032275293010502.post-32302716884017806862012-12-11T08:10:43.874-08:002012-12-11T08:10:43.874-08:00@Lori - Oh cool! There's a lot more to the story, esp. with Levin and his views on faith, and Douglas Henshall is adorable throughout the movie! I think you'd also appreciate Helen McCroy's Anna. That of course is what led me to dare view a clip of the Sean Bean version. I think the casting is rather bizarre in that version, though I must say the locations are amazing...apparently it was filmed in Russia.Lorihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13526569454787709981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1319032275293010502.post-68686377967799633892012-12-10T12:00:23.418-08:002012-12-10T12:00:23.418-08:00@Rissi - Well the film is that, at the very least....@Rissi - Well the film is that, at the very least. :) Thanks!

@Amy Jane - Thank you! Sumptuous is an excellent word to describe this film. :) I thought Knightley was excellent in this film, particularly in how she shows Anna's disintegration. I'm probably biased since I loved this film, but I think it's worth a shot -- and even if you don't like Knightley in the film, there's always Jude Law and Gleeson as Levin. :)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11986319237275869540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1319032275293010502.post-65401011761551395112012-12-07T17:46:19.919-08:002012-12-07T17:46:19.919-08:00Awesome review. Because she ruined that P&P for me. I have long anticipated this movie for that reason alone. And the costumes. And the many actors in it (Thanks for reminding me to watch for Footman William). I saw Kaye's note that she was disappointed in the movie. I am still very much looking forward to it and now that I have a job (for the first time in a year) I might not mind spending the money to catch up on what's out in theaters now.

Wonderful review Ruth! Stories of destructive behavior and stories of redemption and grace. I'm so glad to hear the film makers captured all these stories within the one.
